This is the first book to condense humor into five elements. Here are the elements that make something funny.
A- The element of surprise - Something unexpected is funny.
B- The element of audacity - Someone who is inconsiderate or shameless is funny.
C- The element of obsession - Someone who acts absurd or inflexible is funny.
D- The element of relief - Making light of a frustration is funny.
And E- The element of ego - Making yourself (and/or the people and things you like) superior is funny.
This book lists 100 joke techniques primarily based on these five elements. The techniques include joke examples (181 in total) which come from varied sources, including popular sitcoms like The Simpsons and The Office, and popular comedians like Christopher Titus and the PhilosoRaptor. This short reference may be the only one you’ll ever need to understand and create humor.
UPDATE June 3, 2014
The bad reviews for this book are a bit puzzling, and seem to show a lack of understanding about the purpose of the book. That may be due to mistakes in marketing or preconceived expectation in the readers.
So to make the purpose of the book clear It's just a toolbox of joke techniques. When you use a tool (such as an electric screwdriver), you don't need to know how the tool works; you only need to know how to use it. So in the book, you get the joke technique, followed by an example or two that uses it.
If you want to know why the technique works, you know it has something to do with the specific element of humor it's listed under.
When it comes to learning how to write jokes, the names and examples of joke techniques and the basic underpinning of those techniques is all you need to create humor. Almost everything else is hogwash.

This book is more like a self published paper in a cover. The "elements" are not bad per se, trying to categorize humor is a daunting task and the second star is for effort. The "jokes" are quotes from a few television shows (Simpsons, Community, The Office) or a standup. Its just not engaging, effective or enjoyable. Its good to seek a framework for understanding humor but there are much better books out there, "What are you laughing at?" for one and "How about Never is Never Good for You?", by Bob Mankoff.for another. Maybe its personal but I did not find the jokes in the book funny and I am trying to see humor and understand it. So two stars for the effort.Product details

The Five Elements of Humor And 100 Joke Techniques That Go With Them Zac Toa 9781479122073 Books Reviews
I've taken an honors level undergraduate seminar titled "The Study of Humor" and this book captured the essence of everything we covered, from Bergson to Freud.
Pros
-- Fun, easy read.
-- Classic theories of humor presented in a contemporary context; relevant stuff.
-- Short and to the point; little fluff.
-- Structured in a logical way.
Cons
-- A few corny jokes.
All in all, I'd say I'm satisfied with this purchase.
This is more of a compilation of jokes than a book. The author briefly gives an explanation of the theme of the jokes and then proceeds to list jokes from different TV shows. If what you want is to learn how to use humor in conversations or make others laugh then this book is not well suited for that purpose. The jokes are funny but that's about it you can take from this book.
Learning comedy is a tough challenge, especially if English is your second language or if you were raised in Germany (LOL). In life, I believe that you learn the mechanics of humor through observing funny patterns and then, you develop your own personal style through introspection.
If you are a left brainer like me, you need a book like this to identify these patterns and the enclosed examples to reinforce the foundation. This book will provide you, some excellent building blocks to develop your own witty reparte.
Good job, author, and well worth the few dollars for the right audience.
傻瓜字兵法
Revolutionary codification of humour;
Euclid says that things which coincide with each other are equal to each other;
孙子兵法 has thirteen chapters, the first being explanatory of the five fundamentals of war, and the seven appraisals based on each, and a summary of the methods of deception to follow. The following twelve chapters are essays on the 12 things previously mentioned, following the flow of the 吕率然.
Now, 傻瓜字兵法, also has thirteen chapters, the first forming its basis, outlining the procedure to be followed, but, a master of deception the fool truly is, because he continues his appraisals into the second chapter, showing his true mastery of waging war. And, finally, in a post script, chapter XIV, the author illustrates the manner of his mastery.
Thus I have appropriated the title, "The Fool's Words on the Art of War"; for, thinking and acting mechanically, forming words and military procedures against a melon, this is what is meant by the words 傻瓜字兵法.
Truly A work of art on art.
Zach Toa provides a list of examples to back up his claim that all jokes fall into one of his categories. That's it. No analyzing how jokes are written. No interviews with writers. Just jokes he copied down from watching tv and a few musings he posted on facebook. Save your three bucks, but more important - save your time and read something else.
I used this book as a reference while writing my most recent novel, and I found it very useful. When I got stuck trying to write something funny, I'd look through the examples he gave and I'd usually come up with a decent joke of my own. This is well worth the inexpensive price he's asking.
This book will be unlike anything you've ever read, simply because it brings to surface a phenomenon that most people never think about -- what makes something funny?
In the book, the author lays out the basic premises of humor and provides numerous examples of each, often calling upon (hilarious) examples from T.V. shows like The Office and Community. Not only does this technique make the book an enjoyable read, but it also helps make the learning process more pleasant. Funny and informational - can a book get better than that?
As a reader, I also had a deep appreciation for the amount of thought and research that must have gone into the making of this book, as everything is so thoroughly and thoughtfully explained.
My only advice is that, when reading this, please remember the purpose of the book. It's probably not going to make you a funnier person, at least not directly. Consider this book an educational tool that provides insight into the world of humor, and expect to laugh along the way. If you're anything like me, you'll find yourself thinking back to some of these elements, even in your everyday life!
